How to Use AI in Video Without Losing Your Voice
Video Transcript
Okay. So how do you use AI in your video creation process without losing your voice?
And more than that, how do you keep, and even strengthen, your sense of agency. That feeling of, yes, this is me. This is what I want to say.
Because it’s very easy to use AI for ideas, scripting, and all of that. And it is great for that. But the more you hand over, the less it can feel like you.
And when being on camera already feels unnatural for a lot of people, using words that are not yours just amplifies that discomfort.
The Real Issue With AI and Video
The challenge is not AI itself. The challenge is how we use it.
Most people use AI to create. To write. To script. To decide what to say.
I use it very differently.
Rather than asking AI to create for me, I ask it to critique, reflect, and give feedback on what I have already put together.
What Communication Is Really About
With any form of communication, public speaking, video, presentations, you have what you want to say.
That alone can take time to work out.
But even when you get that right, there’s still another question. What are people actually going to hear?
Because you might say “A-B-C”, and someone hears “A-B-D. Or “C-B-A”. Or something completely different and you think, how on earth did they get that?
But that is the reality of communication. I say something. Someone else hears something.
The real skill in video and public speaking is understanding what other people hear, and whether that is what you want them to hear.
How I Use AI as a Reflection Tool
So this is how I use AI.
I’ll load something in. That might be a transcript from a video I’ve already filmed. Or a rough script. Or even just bullet point ideas.
Then I’ll say something like, imagine you are a 40 year old person working in this industry. You’re worried about this. You care about that. What would you take away from what I’ve said in this video?
AI will then summarise what it thinks I’ve communicated. It might say, I’m not quite sure about this part. Or I think the main message is this.
What that gives me is insight into what a potential audience might hear.
Keeping Your Agency
This is the important part.
I am not asking AI what I should say. I’m not asking it to rewrite anything for me.
I want it to tell me what it does not understand, or what assumptions it is making.
Then I decide what to do with that information.
Sometimes I’ll read its response and think, that’s not what I meant at all. Okay, that’s useful.
Sometimes I completely disagree with it. And honestly, I love that.
There are moments where it says, I’d think this, and I’m like, yeah, you don’t know what you’re talking about. And that actually strengthens my clarity around what I want to say and who I am talking to.
Not Everyone Is Your Audience
Sometimes it will say, I didn’t understand this part.
And I’ll think, yeah, of course you didn’t. That’s not who this is for.
And that’s fine.
Because this is where brand and strategy come in. You are not trying to please everyone with your videos. You are trying to resonate with a very specific person in a very specific way.
Using AI like this helps you understand that more clearly.
The Key Shift to Make
So the key shift is this.
Ask AI what it understands. Ask what it hears. Ask how it interprets what you have said.
Do not ask it what you should do.
That’s how you find your voice, rather than outsourcing your voice to AI and letting it work from assumptions you don’t even see.
Keep the assumptions with you. Let AI reflect them back to you.
Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on, and if you find any particularly useful questions to ask it. Drop them in the comments so others can use them too.
